It was originally made of pure silver, so being more valuable than the metal nickel, it would be smaller although worth more. If gold was used to make a dollar coin, it would be smaller than a dime!

The sizes of the nickel and dime were determined by the value of their weight plust the cost to make as originally made. The dime was made of 90% silver and 10% copper. The nickel is 25% nickel and 75% copper. As it was then and is still today, silver is more valuable than copper and/or nickel. Today's dime is made of 75% copper and 25% nickel. It wasn't resized because of people's familiarity with the size and also the cost to the economy involving changing millions of vending machines, pay phones, etc.
