It checks do see if a word that a person has typed matches one found in a dictionary. It does not take grammar or the sentence context into account. My evaluation research professor showed us once that often an error will go overlooked by spell check, even if it is not what the writer intended to say. After all, its just a computer program; it doesn't have a brain. Anyway, my prof showed this paper where "there," "their," and "they're" were all mixed up and the spell check did not correct it. There was also a sentence that was supposed to start "the pen is..." Instead, it said, "the penis..." Thus, it's better to profread yourself or ask a friend to do it.

Back in my day...the spell checker was also known as the BRAIN.

What I hate even more is when people use text slang: Ur for you are, ne for any, etc. I can handle a typo or misspelling more than I can handle purposely slaughtering the language.
