I heard they do now. If so i cant believe that.

Yes-they are tested on sight words, or words they should know just by looking at them. This test is done usually 3 times a year. Once when the year starts to get a baseline, again at semester, and finally at the end of the year. They are not given the every Friday pencil and paper test however.

my son was in kindergarten last year. They do indeed, they call them "sight words" he has to be able to write certain words when they rattle them off.

He also had homework invluding writing sentences and basic math.

First grade homework is even more.
