I've got a HP business inkjet 1100d and from time to time it prints a random string of characters on each page, on the top of the page. My solution is to pull out the paper from the paper feed, to cancel the print job, turn off the printer and after that to turn on again. Sometimes I have to restart the computer too.

First, your sending too much data to the printer too fast. You have an older model and it will only take so much data before you get a conflict and it does what you described.
Solution: buy a new one, they are fairly cheap these days, even get a refurb.
If you really love this model, you can try a print dump buffer device that holds the data for the printer.
In the end, it may not be compatable with your PC/Windows.

Delete any print jobs that may be in the Queue. Restart the computer.
This should get rid of the fully little characters.
Hp's paper feeds can be fickle.
Take all the paper out. Only place one sheet. Start a print job. Wait until you get your out of paper warning and insert your normal stack of paper, the hit OK.
I often have this problem with my Hp 1215 and that seems to remedy the issue.
Good luck.

Just done a printer yesterday like yours.
(1) Go onto the web site and down-load ALL the latest software (All of it)
(2) un-install all the the old software (make sure the printer is switched off),, power down and re-boot your system.
(3) Re--install the new software, and then switch on the printer on.
That's it.

At the price of printers these days you are probably better buying a new one rather than trying to fix your old one!
