I think we should put factories in prisons and let the inmates make the money to pay back the country for thier keep. They eat three meals a day and cost us a fortune in medical treatment (better than I get) and do nothing since there is no rehabilitation in prisons anymore.

I believe putting prisoners to work would be a form of rehabilitation in itself. Maintaining activity in even menial work or preferrably something with tradeskills would result in better knowledge and capability to work in the outside world.

Actually, the inmates in Michigan are required to work. There aren't any "slackers." Their pay however is extremely minimal so they don't contribute a whole lot to pay the country for their keep.
The financial burden is a major problem here in Michigan. We have many inmates - up to 40% I've heard - that are incarcerated way beyond the minimal requirements - I'm talking about lower level crimes and not as risky offenders that could be released but aren't. So we continue to pay to house people that could start taking practical steps to responsible living on the outside.

I feel it would serve us as a people, maybe then we could get some of these taxes lowered, i.e. gas/food. Prisoners get three meals a day, cable and more free time by doing nothing more than committing a crime than people who work three two and three jobs and can't get assistance when needed because they work for a living. I agree with putting factories of some sort inside prisons. when and if they get out, their going to have to work anyway, it'll help them adjust better if they're already used to it.

There is a guy in Arizona that runs a tent prison.

(Some people disagree with the way he runs it, but I have to give him some credit for it).

They have fences just like a normal prison, but there are almost no buildings. All of the inmates sleep on cots in tents (his theory is that if our soldiers are having to endure those conditions - and have heavy/hot armor and equipment too, then prisoners shouldn't have it any better).

They eat baloney sandwiches on white bread for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

And most importantly, they do road work.

Again, some people have referred to it as cruel, or inhumane, but he has managed to eliminate some of the major problems that other prisons have. I can gaurantee that they have a lot less people coming back there. You would definitely think twice.

There is a bill in Colorado to answer the illegal worker problem, to put inmates out working the fields. I like that idea!

I am quite sure that most prisoners would welcome the work. since boredom is the worst part of prison life.

I am not sure though, how you could manage and administer these "factories".

It would cost a lot more than the current system.

They get the crappiest of food--and the minimum in medical care. NO--if a person is arrested, and the state wants to put him in prison--it's up to the state to pay for it. It's not as though the criminal is on vacation in the Bahamas--it's not like he made a reservation to be on vacation. He is living in the worst possible conditions--and not allowed to live his own life--And YOU think that He (or She) should have to pay for THAT?????

The only problem with this is the workers in the competing factories that get laid off.

Yes. They need to work and learn some skills. If they are released with no job skills, they'll end up going right back.
