The connection is not mine and I 'take' from an unsecured connection in my area. It was never a problem until very recently and I wondered what could be the cause of the failure to connect even though the icon shows it is ok. The wireless card is in good order and my laptop was used this way at a friends house and was also working ok. Thanks in advance for any advice.

The wireless connection you show is only for the connection to the wireless router you are hijacking. The owner of the router may have blocked your MAC address from getting access to the network, or may have otherwise disabled your access.

Your only real options are to hope someone else opens a network connection, or to (god forbid) purchase your own network connection.

Maybe the signal strength has dropped to a level that you can not surf with. For a normal surfing, you need at least 2 lines of signal strength. Also, thereis something else that interference and weakens the signal ( another network near you, a mobile phone, a microwave oven etc).

The unsecured connection may not be unsecured anymore...
Disable your card and then enable it again...
I had a problem similar to this one, but it was because of a device driver.

Sounds like your MAC address has been blocked or MAC filtering enabled on the router.

You are able to connect to the router but no further.

Gotcha.

Guess you will have to get your own conection.

Odds are you have been busted. The owner of the network has realized you are there and restricted your access. Recommend you get off his network, and you lose the laptop. Get it out of your house permanently. It has hardware information, recorded by his router, that will identify it to the police. Should he decide to report you, you could face criminal charges for being on his network. As well as fines from his ISP for using their equipment without paying.

They know your stealing Internet and know where you live, so you might want to hide when someone knocks at your door, because it could be the cops.

Trust me I read about it in a news article a while back.
