Photosynthesis uses the energy from sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into glucose. Respiration converts glucose into water and carbon dioxide and releases energy. This creates a cycle.

Both can act in unison or independently but in general and for obvious reasons photosynthesis takes place during the day and dominates while respiration occurs all the time and predominates at night when photosynthesis shuts down.
