depends on what you mean by successful. on the one hand they brought an end to the monarchy and the aristocracy in France so that was a political and social success. however, it brought about the reign of terror in which anyone whose loyalty to the republic was executed. this includes all aristocrats even those republicans like the Chevalier St. Georges, and early leaders of the revolution who had fallen out of favor with other faction of the revolutionaries. the reign of terror and the taking over of aristocrats lands by people who not necessarily had the skill for the job, led to inflation. without a stable government (no monarchy) few of the other economic powers of Europe were reluctant to invest in France. the instability of France would be one the reason to the rise of Napoleon who would attempt to make France into an empire, so a guess it wasn't a success in the short term. but the idea of liberty, equality, and fraternity would inspire the future of France.
