Someone you're with because they make you look cool or because it's the "done" thing. If you have a token friend, you don't necessarily like the person, but you hang out with them for how they make you look. For example, you can have a token gay friend to show how progressive and open you are. Or a token black employee to show how accepting your company is. Old TV shows used to have a black or latin character JUST so that black or latin people would watch the show.

the word token is typically used to described a character in a film/tv show, usually just put there to make the cast seem a bit more diverse who is just a stereotype of their minority and usually isnt actuly even involved in the plot. ie the token gay guy: really camp, female best friend, well dressed etc. or token black guy, dresses like a bit of a rapper but is a genuinly nice guy, usually one of the best friends of the main character. they usualy include these characters to try and gain fans from the characters minority, and generaly seem mor open and inclusiv.

it can also describe a token friend employee etc, their ust there to show you are open and all that.

A token is something used as a substitute for the real thing.

When referring to a person, it often means that the person is selected because someone had to be selected.

In racial terms it often refers to company's doing things that expedient vice trying to really establish an equal opportunity.

a token is someone who is seen as the representative (or obligatory) person, usually when they are in a minority in a group of people

"he always hangs out with white people, i guess he's their token Black person

do you mean in a fashion sense? if so, i guess it would mean taking someone with you to an event, just so you wont be alone, or else to be seen with them (perhaps its an attractive person )
basically it means having/inviting/being with someone,,,,,, for reasons other then just them(their own qualities) ,,,,,,, maybe hiring someone to say you hire all races/genders,,,,,
