Depending upon where you're staying, you may not need to worry about transportation hardly at all. If you stay center strip (Mirage, Venetian, Caesar's, Harrah's, Treasure Island, Wynn, Paris, Balley's Bellagio, or Aladdin), you'll be within walking distance of the majority of Vegas' attractions.
If you're staying north strip or south strip, you'll find it easiest to get around using a taxi. The nice thing about taxis is that they line up directly in front of all the hotel entrances and all the hotels have someone in charge of the taxi stands to help you hail a cab. Relatively speaking, taxis are fairly cheap. I was in Vegas this past December and it only cost $6.00 to go from the Mirage to MGM (about two and a half miles) and we had four people in the cab.
We also used the monorail while we were there and I can give you a couple of reasons to skip it. First, it's location is terrible. It sits behind all the casinos on the east side of the strip and has only a small handful of stations. Second. It's expensive! You'll pay more for a single ticket for the monorail than you will for a taxi that will hold four people.
As for a rental car, unless you plan to leave Vegas for sightseeing (Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, etc.), skip the rental car. Leave the driving in Vegas to the experienced taxi drivers. And of course, you then don't have to worry about parking.
Taxis are truely the way to go.

I wouldn't rent a car. The Las Vegas strip has a lot of traffic. Cabs can be expensive but some of them know an alternate route to get to other hotels on the strip. The monorail behind MGM is expensive but nice and convienent. We do a lot of walking or taking the free trams and shuttles. Walk and if you get tired stop in a hotel and have a drink. That is the best way for sight seeing. You could always take a cab back if you go too far and pay 1 way instead of both.

You dont' want a car in Vegas, it keeps someone from drinking and having fun.
Cabs are easy and not too expensive.
The monorail is cheap, and that is about the only good thing to say about it. It only goes to certain hotels on the west side of the strip, it takes a while to walk to the stops and wait for it to arrive. If you have the time but not the money it helps, but then if that is the case you probably don't belong in Vegas to begin with.

Many of the larger hotels have rental cars - MGM Grand
has a Dollar location - so you could check to see if where you are staying offers a car rental - or find out from the concierge where the closest location is ( many right on the strip )
Its been a few years- but there is a trolly that runs along the strip for about 2.00 - you can get on and off at several hotels
It takes a while but its cheap. Not sure when that service ends. Cabs can be expensive due to traffic - so save the cabs for if you are far away from your hotel at night

Stay at a hotel on the strip. Then just walk. When you finally give out, then you can take the new monorail system back to your motel. I'm sure any major hotel can arrange to have a car delivered to you at your hotel. I recommend the Flamingo, as it's in the middle of everything and has a beautiful pool. And it's relatively inexpensive, but still 4 star. Don't bother with downtown; but if you must go there, take the bus. But you won't like it much. It's just old and kinda grungy down there. Some people prefer that. I don't.

well the monorail is definitely best but of course you will be limited as you are in the air and this will keep you confined to the indoors...and you are definitely going to want to step out and take it all in from the outside!
you aren't going to want to drive if you don't know Vegas!
a cab is a good choice in getting to the strip. have the cabbie drop you off in the destination you desire...preferable in the center of the strip and then WALK. that is the most desirable and you will get the most out of your Vegas experience.
i would also suggest that if there is several adults going that you all pitch in and rent a limo for 1 night and ride down the strip....if you are all pitching in it won't be much at all and WELL WORTH IT!!
have fun!!! i used to live in L.A. and it was only 3 hours away so i traveled there all the time. my sister used to live there as well.
oh and as far as the prices for staying in the casinos...during the week they are very cheap...sunday-thursday...then they go way up on Fri./Sat. or the out of towners.
For some idea of prices you might want to check out some of the hotels ranging anywhere from Excaliber on the lower end..although a good hotel..mostly a family hotel...to the MGM grand....that will give you a good price range of how much you are going to pay for decent hotels during the week. Unless you plan on staying at Ceasars then never mind they are pricey any day of the week! ; )

dont rent a car and don't take cabs (once you are there you'll understand why i said this).
why not just use the rail that is there it doesn't go all the way down the strip but it takes up a good part of it. and honestly the stripe is easy to walk and it is what you should do. if you are gonna go off the stripe and check things out then yes get a car..but don't get one if youre just staying on the stripe.
YOU WILL REGRET IT.
why? because the traffic is HORRIBLE. it can take a cab up to 20 minutes just to get ONE BLOCK..so you'll end up paying up the booty....now go rent a car and see how much gas you'll use when you could have just walked...30 bucks for gas a day? or 30 bucks to gamble?
been to vegas more than once.

If you want a car they are available at the strip or hotels. I would just plan on cabs and the bus.
Honestly renting a car for a weekend in vegas sounds like hell. I have been there many many times and I just take cabs

The monorail is nice but it isn't cheap. About 2 years ago it was over $3.00 a ride. Renting a car isn't worth it either if you just plan to drive from hotel to hotel. Many hotels have trams that take you from one hotel to the other but those hotels have to be under the same owners. There is an Excalibur shuttle that goes to Luxor and to Mandalay Bay. There are a few of those on the strip and they are free.

Actually, the strip is VERY compact. It would be a waste to get a car. If you stay or get dropped off at Treasure Island (right in the middle) you can take one day and see one half of the strip, then the next day, the other half.
