I use the motor mfg paint and primer when I painted my lower units. I bought the paint and primer from a Mercruiser dealer. The reason, have to be careful with painting over aluminum. Any dissimilar metals in the primer will eat the aluminum housings. Not worth taking a short cut

David A is correct, use the manufacturers aftermarket pressure pak paint products but, DO NOT paint over the trim tab or the lower section of your motor will corrode very badly. Also use a wire brush on any corrosion before priming. cheers Pete.

If you use a wire brush, make sure it's stainless steel or you will only add to your problems. The primer for aluminum is usually zinc chromate and a good enamel top coat will do. There are aftermarket products available or original products from the manufacturer (OEM) that you should be able to find at any good marine supply source.
