Believe it or not the history of the rocket dates back more than 2000 years.
A roman named Aulus Gellius wrote in 460 BC about a Greek named Archytas. He invented a steam propelled bird shaped rocket the was hooked on wires. The this Steam Rocket could not take off under it's own thrust though.
Then around 206 BC the Chinese during the Hann Dynasty experimented with gun powder and fireworks.
These were considered to be the precursor for the solid rocket.
Rockets have a long history in the annuals of war going back to Gengis Kahn who stole the technology from China. The Europeans who acquired it from the Mongols. It was also used at the Siege of Constantinople in 1493.
Wikipedia has a nice section on it that explains things in more detail if you want more information.
As mentioned already the first liquid fueled rocket was launched in 1926 at the city of Auburn in Massachusetts.

In 1923 Dr. Robert Goddard tested the first of a new type of rocket engine, one using gasoline, and liquid oxygen as the motive force. This was the first revolutionary advance over previous solid-fueled rockets.
In 1926 Goddard sent up his first rocket. It was about four feet high, six inches in diameter, and was held in a frame like a child's jungle gym. This nevertheless, was the grandfather of the monsters that a generation later were to rumble upward from Florida.
