If you don't know the answer, why do you people even bother.

Laptop/ notebook hard drives are standard 2.5". some have a 1.8" hard drive in them but it's uncommon. For desktops, the standard is 3.5" hard drives, they're bigger in all dimensions- height, width, and depth and require more power.

if you buy a portable one, get a 2.5" because it can be powered by a usb cable. 3.5" drives require additional power.

The 2.5" hard drives are common to laptops. The require very little power to spin and therefore can be powered by USB only. The bigger 3.5" hard drives are those found in desktops and require more power to spin. The draw back to using a 2.5" is the storage capacity is normally less than the capacity on a 3.5" for the same price. But for convenience and portability the 2.5" drive is the way to go.

2.5" HDD's are usually internal HDDs, where as 3.5" HDD's are external and connect through either a USB or FIREWIRE cable. A 2.5" HDD can be turned into a 3.5" HDD w/ a special casing.
