Apparently, the live sand that I used for substrate contained a few unwelcome inhabitants that attacked the Starfish.

Will the Starfish survive? I know that some species of Starfish can regenerate limbs, but I have been unable to find out if this particular type can (Fromia milleporella).

Starfish lose arms when the nitrites/nitrates and ammonia levels are too high. I recommend doing a 25% water change if you haven't done that recently or on a regular basis (once/month) since starting up your aquarium.

All starfish can regenerate limbs but I would worry about the bacteria or parasites that did it you should call a spcialist and see if there is some way to get rid of them

Sad to say, but it doesn't sound good. I had a chocolate chip star fish for nearly a year and then all of a sudden it quit eating and then lost it's limbs one by one. It didn't make it and I removed what was left of him so he wouldn't contaminate my tank any more than it already did.

Then I had a sand sifting star fish, it too started loosing limbs one by one. It didn't make it either. I was affraid it would contaminate my tank and removed it. If it looks like yours is going to loose another limb, I would remove it before it ruins your system. Good luck and hope your lil guy makes it.

It generally lives alone, but if the aquarium is large enough to support more than one, it will tolerate others of its own species. It requires a mature tank with algae and is generally fairly self-sufficient in the aquarium, finding enough micro-organisms and detritus to scavenge if live rock is present. . It is intolerant of copper-based medications and high levels of nitrate, and is very sensitive to changes in specific gravity, temperature, salinity and pH of the water, and oxygen levels. Avoid exposing a Red Starfish to air or sudden salinity changes, as this is detrimental to its health, often resulting in bacterial infections and necrosis of an arm, or possible death.

First find out what is attacking your starfish.
After that it will take up to a year to grow back the limbs it lost.
