i'll tell you my sister's story..... she got sucked into the mary kay salespitch at a make up party one night about 4 years ago, and she is still paying off her debt.
she signed up because she was going off of what the girl told her...well.....after putting a TON of money on her credit cards, she realized it takes a LOT of footwork to find a customer base, and all of the pressure is on you. the "training" videos actually recommend you go up to strangers in the store and say, "you have really great skin. i sell mary kay." i just think that is ridiculous...not to mention i'd had a couple ladies say that to me over the years...and its awkward.
it comes down to this.....in my opinion.....its all kind of a scam. if it sounds too good to be true...it probably is. not to mention, i'm tired of getting mary kay products for every holiday from my sister. she's still trying to get rid of her stock.
i vote "no" on mary kay.

I think the most important question is do you like the products. I think the people that come into Mary Kay and soon quit are those that got caught up in the fun and excitement and never actually believed in the products. I am a consultant and I signed up solely because I absolutely love the products. I actually spent $400 on products about 6 months before I even knew about the business side of Mary Kay. I decided to sign up first to get the discount and the longer I have been in it the more I have been working the businesses. I do not go up to strangers to get new customers. All of my customers I have met through someone else. I have a friend and her sister coming over tonight. I have never met her sister. For me Mary Kay is a fun excuse to hang out with my girlfriends, meet my friend's friends and make some extra money. I have a full time job and Mary Kay is extra money for me and I think it is a lot of fun.

As with any business or job there is good and bad it works for some and not for others. It's funny how peole struggle over trying direct sales but will get dressed up sometime put out money for a new suit spend a lot of time and money preparing for an interview hoping to get a job to find out they hate it and if they quit anyway they say it just didn't work out and no one cares with diect sales everyone has an opionion.
I always ask people when trying to decide is the 100 investment worth the risk? Do you like the product? would you spend $100 anyway? if so why not give it a try and see. I was anti-sales. I never liked home parties and was not interested when my consultant fist brought it up to me. I really liked the product and was spending a minimum of $54 every 3 to 4 months anyway so for me it was worth it to try and see. I got the facts did some research on my own and a year later finnally decided to give it a try within a year I quit my full time job and have been home with my children working my Mary Kay business part time. It is a business and you have to work at building it. The reorder part is a good thing especially when I had my yougest it gave me an income when I wasn't working. The question is do you want to work hard to build someone else business or your own? People will influence you pulling you both ways go with your guit do your own research ask a lot of questons. I would be happy to answer any questions. Write down the pro's and con's and anything you need to know in order to make an educated dession as to if this is right for you

I do the Mary Kay thing and I love it!! I know so many wonderful women who do it and love it too...the new doesn't really wear off...The products in a sense does sell itself...but you have to get it out there and let the people try it...It is so much better than other brands and it has been #1 for 13 consecutive years now. I would definately talk to your friends director and have her to let you listen to a Choices CD and you will know more about it. If you want to make a lot of money in it, you will have to work, but it is so much more fun and better than working to make someone else rich!!! Good luck with whatever you choose!!

If you're looking into an at-home sales business, look into a smaller one with less representatives, there's more room to move up. With Mary Kay, almost everyone knows someone who works for them, so they don't need someone else.
A good company to try would be the Body Shop at Home, they're barely starting out and need new people. Great natural products, not the Mary Kay frame of mind.

I personally don't care for Mary Kay. I used it for a while but did not have good results so I started selling AVON. I love it! The price is much better and works better too. It only costs $10 to get started and you has much more than just skin care and cosmetics. This is not your mothers Avon. We have gifts, apparel, jewelry, skin care, personal care, a Mens line, mark (for the younger set). You really can make money with this. At the very least, the products are great even if you just want to be a customer. If you want to take a look, visit www.youravon.com/tcorley

You have to sell the product like it's the fountain of youth if you actually want to make a profit. Mostly middle aged women buy it. Those women want to get rid of wrinkles, and have more supple skin. They will try anything. I've seen it. But it's useful if you want to get Mary Kay stuff for half the price. But you do have to spend a few hundred dollars at the beginning. You can actually make a website too. You can even sell the stuff on Ebay. It doesn't always require busting your butt and hitting the street trying to sell to whoever will listen to you. If you have the money, and you want to get that stuff for half price, then go for it. A lot of the products are good, and it lasts for a long time, and I always have Mary Kay stuff that I buy. Its just like selling anything else. You buy a certain amount, and then resell it for higher. That's it.

I don't think you should do it on the basis that you are indifferent about the Mary Kay product.
That will show through to your possible clients in your attempted sales.
You could try being a ScarletGirl if you wanted to sell products to your friends.

No! There are so many Mary Kay reps out there. I think you should do Purse Party! Start up is very cheap and it sells itself! Let me know if you want more info!

I know some former MK reps that have switched out of it to Mark and are loving it! I've heard a lot of bad stuff from the Mk stories. If you try hard enough you can find negatives to anything; however I've been pretty surprised at the bad rap they get. Personally I haven't met one I like!
Did you know they have a dress code too?
Oh and to add to a previous comment: MARK started out as intended for young girls in their teens and early twenties; but is growing every day. New products are keeping all of us young at heart! I know lots of us on our 30's that love it!
