Spin the torque convertor a few times while pushing it back towards the rear of the van. You should hear a "clunk" noise. Once its seated, bolt the trans back up, and try again to move the motor by hand.

Did you check to make sure the torque converter was properly seated on the transmission oil pump BEFORE you attempted to bolt the transmission up to the block? Are the torque converter studs lined up 100% with the flexplate holes? I would say the above two questions should address the concern you are having. DO NOT force the transmission into the engine block, or you will have ruined the oil pump!!! Hope this helped.

They make a tool to align the splines properly - if they are not aligned properly you will have the exact problem you are having now.
Go to an auto parts store and ask then for the tool and tell them what it is you are working on - they should have it.
