It's not similar to doctors.

Pharmacists dispense drugs. Doctors diagnose and treat you. They prescribe drugs sometimes to treat the illness. Pharmacists pass those drugs out to you and tell you how to take them.

Is it just that simple? No. Pharmacists have to make sure the drug won't cause you any harm (whether through an illness or allergy you have, or if it will cause a new unintended effect with some other drug you're taking. They're backups to doctors because some doctors usually don't have the time/or care enough to check your history to see what you've had in the past. They just prescribe a drug that will deal with the one ailment you're currently complaining about. They also don't know drugs that well and how they interact with each other.
