The recovery CD they recommend will have an image of your system the way it was before the upgrade, in case there is a system failure during upgrade. This means if you restore with the new recovery disk, you won't lose anything you have stored on your machine, including all settings you have changed. The recovery CD that came with your machine will only restore it to factory new condition.

It's a good idea to keep a backup regardless. However if you do make the recovery CD and install Vista, the recovery CD will restore the PC to it's original operating system and you will have to reinstall Vista again..

Your current recovery disk would take you back to the point your computer was at when you made that disk. If that is current enough for you, then you do not need to make another.

The recommendation to make a recovery disk is based on the fact that most people (including myself) never get one made. (And as an IT professional I should know better -- LOL)
