H is a symbol for hydrogen and O is the symbol of oxygen
hydrogen has a single free electron in its valence shell and oxygen has 2 free electrons in its valence shell.
so when oxygen and hydrogen combine to form water oxygen need two atoms of hydrogen to make an inactive compound.
below is given the chemical eqn of froming water from hydrogen and oxygen
2H + O --------------------> H2O

H20.
Well the h stands for hyrdogen and the 2 after means 2 atoms of hydroge. The o stands for oxygen and since there's nothing after there is only 1 oxygen molecule.
