He does push it in America, but the people are too lazy to listen. Guatemala has true poverty. Children start working at 5 years old to help support the family. Here in the US it's hard to get a 25 year old to work. All they want is for the government to give, give, give. The liberals don't want to fix the problem, because then they would never win an election by playing the wealthy vs poor card. I took school supplies down to a rural town in Guatemala and only had one pencil for each student. You would think they won the lottery because of that one pencil. In the US, you can win the lottery and then complain about how much taxes you have to pay from your winnings. (Case in point, the people who won free cars on the Oprah show and then complained they had to report that as earnings and pay taxes. Whiney little punks.) If you don't like Bush, I have no problem with that, but come up with a better argument instead of sounding like a moron.

This is one thing Bush is good at. I know, I know, unbelievable right?! He is good at moving the point of view to something totally different than what is important for the US. Before 9-11 he was already targeting Iraq since his popularity was lowering. Then it went through the roof because of 9-11 and the war on Iraq. Wouldn't you know it, it was during his campaigning. Well, that is in the past. The reason he is pushing for anti-Poverty in Guatemala is because it is unquantifiable. The only reason he is even putting it out in public is because he wants the public to see he is doing some good in foreign policy. See the beauty of it. Say you are going to do a good thing in a place nobody cares about. Do very little to nothing. Then say there has been a great progress and back it up by some funky numbers. All of a sudden your a hero and you didn't do anything but say that you would. The public thinks your wonderful and you redirect their attention away from the middle east closer to home, but not in the US. If it was done here, first off, there would have to be something actually done. Second, people would be able to scrutinize it. EHhh....I've always said Bush is a big smoke blower.

Because Poverty in the US means one thing.
Poverty in Guatemala is totally different.

To qualify as "poor" in the USA a single person needs to earn less than $10,488 in a year or 20,444 for two adults and two children. (in 2006).

For comparison the AVERAGE per capita income in Guatemala is $2,230. That is less than half of the poverty level of the USA.

Poverty in Guatemala and USA are not at all the same things.
Most of the richest 10% of Guatemalans would qualify as poor by US standards.

Poor in the USA eat too many hamburgers, and many are overweight. Poor in Guatemala may not eat meat for several months because they cant afford it.

Finally the REAL poverty in Guatemala causes people to come to the USA, and many of them become our poor in the USA, even if the move triples their income.

The US poverty level means people may not have a TV, a car, an air conditioner or telephone, by US standards that makes them poor. I have seen villages in Guatemala of 200+ people where no-one had ANY of the above luxuries or even a light bulb or pane of glass. How many people in the USA have dirt floors? I have yet to see one here in the USA. Very few even among the "poor". I would estimate that is the case for as many as 1/4 or more of the Guatemalans who live outside of the big cities.

How many farmers in the US use oxen to plow the fields? They are still common in Guatemala.

Anyone who questions the poverty in Guatemala has obviously NOT been there. I have been there twice. Both times I was brought to tears at the poverty lever I witnessed. Now before you start with the "but here in America...". Let me tell you that I used to work for social services. My job was to help the poverty stricken of America. There was a small percentage that actually WANTED help. But, I'll be honest with you. Most of the "Americans" that I went to each day, simply wanted a HAND OUT. They wanted ME to do all they work for them! They didn't want me to "teach" them how to get a good paying job. They didn't want me to "teach" them how to save money. They didn't want me to "teach" them how to better their living conditions. They wanted to know what the government could DO for THEM! I got so sick of it!!!

When I went to Guatemala, I was faced with children that were willing to carry your bags from your plane to your taxi for a quarter and were GRATEFUL! I met with families on the street selling fruit that THEY picked. They were there when I woke up and they were there when I came home at night. The Guatemalans that I met were some of the most generous people I had ever seen. Yet they had so little.

My husband and I ended up adopting a 3 year old little boy that was literally starving to death. He was scared to take off his shoes for weeks because of the rats that he was used to living with. He even slept with them on!

Bush can't solve the poverty issue in America OR Guatemala. But thank God he has brought it to light. Now if only some you self righteous Americans would start thinking of someone other than yourselves!!!

......sure Paul, there was never any poverty before GWB came along.

You always talk about GW being ignorant and clueless, but every time you open your mouth it proves that you posses those traits yourself.

P.S. Trying to make sense to this guy is a waste of time.

Bush isn't really pushing for anti-poverty in Guatemala--it's just rhetoric. He's trying to con the Latin Americans into thinking he's not a total jerk.

Doesn't look like he's any more convincing south of the border than he is here! :)

Why do liberals all over the world campaign against poverty and try to erase it from reality, but when Bush tries to do something, all of a sudden you get angry?

And how is it that you don't know what Bush has already done for poor people by cutting their taxes?

(Oh wait, you probably believe he only cut taxes for the rich, even though about 90% of his requests for changes in the tax code helped the middle and lower classes.)

He is in denial that any American citizens would be living in poverty under his watch. And since he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth he don't acknowledge.

Someone need to fax him the stats!

There is a small town in his home State of Texas, I want to say, Temple, not sure that is correct, where many resides, who are so poverty stricken it looks like a third world country. I was shocked!
