Our house is on about 1 acre out in the country, and the majority of our land is our front yard! The yard is just a big open space w/ a pine tree that is close to the road and far away from our house. So, we're wanting to make our yard look "eye opening" by either adding a small pond w/ rocks and flowers or by adding a fountain w/ rocks and flowers also! Anyone have personal experiance or just have any really good ideas or suggestions?

Thanks in advance!!

I am a professional gardener and I think its an excellent idea to put a water feature in, but its not a beginner project unless you have a knack for these kinds of things. Without knowing where in the US you live I would say that normal a running water feature, while more difficult, is better all around- mosquitoes breed in standing water so having a small waterfall or fountain will help not attract (more of) those pesky guys. When thinking about water plants, think ferns, lilies, or Salix discolor (the latin name- the common name is something yahoo sensor's out, funny but I guess appropriate- just google the latin name for the common name)- especially cause if you live in a winter/cold area the stalks will give "winter interest" plus there are a ton of Ornamental Grasses that can be in or near water. (any reputable garden ceter should be able to help you with this) They make a great showy statement and are easy to care for plus they grow fast (so you can buy them small, save money and in two years they will be twice as large!) Good luck and with you project do tones of research and you'll do great!

You can install different type of ponds there are preformed ponds or ones with a rubber liner the rubber liner gives you the option of whatever shape and depth you want both are easy to install rubber being (in my opinion) the easiest. You can purchase both at a good home store or a good pet store.
I listed a link below that has a lot of good information.
You can easily make a water fall and or ad a fountain just about anything you can imagine you can do so be creative and talk to your local store people they know your area and what would work best. I personally like a pond with a water fall and lots of plants lily pads dwarf cattails etc.
Just have fun with it and remember the bigger it is the easier it is to care for.

I have 2 water ponds. they are eye catchers they do require alot of time to make and can be very expensive to build. the one in my front yard is 2 ponds connected with small creek. if you have a slope in your front yard a 2 level pond will look great and be very inviting to spend time just sitting by it and relaxing
the sound from a pond with small sprayers that shot the water up from within will entice you to spend more time outside enjoying what you have made. the small animals and birds as well will enjoy the water and bring them back time after time
you can also purchase fish to be in your pond. I have regular goldfish, koi and shabonkins. if you make your ponds deep enough you won't need to remove your fish every fall......a heater or 2 will keep the water from freezing . a typical pond should be at the deepest part 3 feet or more that way the fish will be safe in the winter. besure of any codes your area might have about open water in your yards. and check aound for prices to see who can give you the best prices and ideas. if you want any more info fill free to contact me...good luck

I personally believe that fountains are more aesthetically pleasing to the eye, and they are much easier to keep clean.

Be careful of restrictions - in Montana there are FWP restrictions.
