Get a copy of the Writers' and Artists' Yearbook and start approaching literary agents.

Have a look at what kind of books they do and what they require. Most need a synopsis, chapter breakdown and sample chapters for your book. For most unpublished authors it's easier if they've already written the entire book - but it's best not to send it straight away.

I wouldn't bother approaching publishers straight away - unless you know the industry it's very difficult getting published without an agent. And if you can't get an agent it's unlikely you'll be able to get a publisher.

Just write the book - send a sypnopsis to agents and get signed up. Hypothetically very simple, but actually difficult because most people aren't up to scratch. Oh and self publishing 99.9% is a waste of time. If you are good enough, someone will pay YOU to write.

with great difficulty. Send a chapter to as many book publishers as you can afford - find their addresses on the internet. Certain publishers deal with certain books. You can browse around the library and find who publishes what.
