I thank you for all answers and I do not regret the action I took. However I did feel it neccessary to call the local Police helpdesk (not the emergency number) from a pay phone and ask their opinion on the matter anonymously.
The desk officer on the other end of the line was very down-to-earth and informed me, as far as she was concerned, no crime had been committed and that what I did was a heat-of-the-moment mistake for a good cause.

PS, my friend tells me Spanky is staying at the vets and that an elderly relative of hers (who lives across the other side of town, far from the thug's territory) is adopting him once he is healed.

Thank you. Animals deserve our protection, just like any other living being. You did the right thing by showing that man no mercy, for he had no mercy himself, and would not appreciate it had it been given to him.
According to the law of Karma, you gave that man no more than was his due, and no less than an equal share of the pain he caused your friend. In addition, your friend Spanky has received the blessing of a safe home. This is all due to your compassion and your anger being in the right place. Many could take a lesson in this, and I hope they do.
