To the above answers, I would just add that it's not entirely accurate all the time.
It can be off for several reasons such as the following:
1. You ovulate at a time of the month that is not typical.
2. You may continue to have periods after you are pregnant.
Your doctor will order an early ultrasound to have a Radiologist make a guess on how far along you are. From seeing so many children in vitro, most Radiologists are pretty good guessers.

Take the first day of your last period. Write it down.
Then add from there. However, even if you know the exact date of conception, this is how the doctor will do the calculation. Then when you're a little further along, if the dates don't match up they will change your due date.
Good luck.

If your periods are every 28 days, they go by the date of your last menstrual period as being day 1 of your pregnancy...sounds strange as you weren't even pregnant. If you are not every 28 days, then I am pretty sure they wait until your first ultrasound to determine how far you are along.

Pregnancy is calculated 40 weeks from the first day of your last period. Your due date will be around 40 weeks from the first day of your last period.
Hope this helps.

I just found out today actually that it's from the first day of your last period. That is seams is why when our mothers had us, they were pregnant 9 months, now it's calculated as 10 months.
Good luck

If you don't know when your last period was or when you got pregnant, the dr. can do an ultrasound where they measure the baby's bones to calculate how far along you are. I had no idea when i got pregnant and they did that so it turns out i am 26 weeks pregnant :)
