ANY animal, given the right circumstances will kill its young, especially if it feels that the runt of the litter will take resources (i.e., food) away from the stronger of the young.
Its just a fact of nature that the mother will do all it can to make sure that the fittest survive.

Absolutely - it is the way of nature if the mother cannot care for it then she will kill it. This happens in the wild when there has been a food shortage or drought and it is why puppies and kittens are removed from their mother's care at the appropriate interval or she may decide the space is too small or there isn't enough food and kill them.

There are quite a few animals that do this. The strongest survive. There could have been something wrong with the one that was killed. Nature has its way of knowing that a youngster is too sick or deformed to live and the parents either kill it or abandon it. This is common.

Animals lack the emotional and selfish based rational that humans have...
They kill what is weak and unable to sustain life on it's own without the help of anyone else. It is called survival and it is not for mean or evil reasons but rather emotionally detached and very practical reasons.
How cruel would it be for them to allow it to live, knowing that it would have to fend for itself eventually but would never be able to learn how?
They don't have Ronald Mc Donald guinea Pig hospitals that take in sick babies... supported by donations of lettuce and kibble...
Sometimes, killing IS humane when you are an animal...

It happens frequently with pandas. They usually kill the one by accident or neglect. That's why scientists are taking one of every set of twins to raise by hand to help the breending program. But like said, any animal could do it.

Hamsters, mice, birds and even some kind of fish. They will only eat the child if they feel threatened, overwhelmed(in and overpopulated area they might feel overcrowded and try to make more room for themselves). They will not eat them if they have enough space or food.

Many animals do that, like gerbils, goldfish, hampster and many others.
THey simply eliminate kids that they know will be impossible to support in a given environment.

I'm not sure what you have but hamsters and rats will kill and eat their babies. The large rats we had, and we didn't now this as we got them from someone else, the male ate the babies.
