Do I have to get my Social Secutiry card first, or do I need my drivers Licences First (I was thinking that I would need my new S.S. card to get a new license) and what should I bring with me to the DmV when i go about chaning my license?

I would totaly call but then i would be on the phone for hours...it would probably be faster just to walk in..lol

It was allot easier than i thought..LOL i just went to the DMV yesterday and sat in line for only about 45 (thats really good for the area that i live in without an APT.) and than i sent in my S.S. paper work that was sent to me after i got married, Thanks to everyone for all the help!!

Go to DMV with the Marriage certificate....you will need to fill up a form ( you can ask the person there on which one and they will guide you to what to do), then after that, you can go to Social Security officer and show them that temporary license that the DMV gave you with your new last name on it and they will honor that. It better to do it all in one day.. Save a lot of time and energy.

You can get a new SS and a new driver's license in the same day. Get the SS taken care of first, and they will give you a paper that proves you're in the process of getting a new card, which the DMV will accept. You also need your marriage license to prove you got married. Other than that, just your old SS and license. Your new cards will come in the mail several weeks later. I live in CA, and that's all I needed. It could be different in other states. Isn't it annoying doing all that? And our husbands don't have to do anything! :)

I just got married this past fall & u need, like u said, to go to get ur social security card changed first. You will need of course your old ssc, drivers license, and marriage license. Then u have to wait 24 hours before u can go to the DMV to change your drivers license b/c your new ss card has to be in the system 24 hours. I made the mistake of going to the DMV right after getting my card changed & they told me I had to wait 24 hrs. You need your marriage license for the DMV too.

well ,i only know how to get the named changed if you are a citizen. I recently changed mine, and all i needed was the ss card, and a marriage license, and a drivers license. took 30 minutes. but if i were you , i would take my birth certificate too, because i can't recall if i needed it or not, but knowing me i took that too. Very easy process. then they send you a new ss card in the mail, and you keep the old one because noone took that. then you have to go to the DMV, and bring them the old license, marriage certificate, and new ss card, and birth certificate, you know how it is these days. If you don't want to give them your old license, because i like to keep all my i.d., you never know when you will need it, don't forget your credit cards are all in your old name and the bank too, so you may have a difficult time if you don't have it. Anyway to keep the old drivers license, you would have to tell the DMV person that you lost it anyway.

Take your marriage license to the Social Security office along with your old card they'll fix you up with a new card with your married name. States have different things but if are just getting your drivers license name changed the same thing take your Social Security Card, your old drivers license and marriage license that is all you need to just have a name changed.

All you should need to change your license is your marriage license and birth certificate. Regarding your SS number - you will need your marriage license for that as well. Some counties will mail you a form for a new SS card after your marriage license is filed, so that you don't have to go into a branch of SS.

Whether you need to do your social security card first or your license first will depend on your state. In Florida, went to the motor vehicles office with my old license, and my marriage certificate (which arrived in the mail about a week after the wedding) and they changed my name. Check with your state regarding the requirements.

You need to contact each agency and follow their procedures.
You have to call the SS and ask what you need to do. They have the paperwork ready for this case as it is very common. Same with your passport. You should change it, and if you don’t have one, get one. Most post Offices have an office for this, or will direct you to the right place.
To change the driver licese is the same, you need to go and present your Marriage Certificate and they will change the name. Best thing is to contact them first to find out what you need to do and bring over.
Don’t forget, you also have to change your credit cards, banks, and utilities like phone and power.
It is usually a straight through process but you must do it yourself, nobody else will. My Wife was able to do it very quick, and in about a week she had everything done. It took about a month for everything to change.

I recently got married myself. I had to change the name on my social security card and then when i went to the DMV i had to bring my marriage license with me in order for them to change my last name on my license.

when you got married you should have gotten a application for your new s.s card. when you get it go to the dmv and if I was you I would also take my marriage license with you that way you have all the bases covered.
