my car would not start and i tried everything to fix it all the electrical components were good so i messed with it i tried putting in in nuetral and nothing then i put in back in park and wiggled the shifter in place for a minute and bam like magic it started so my question is what is wrong that it took so much to get the car to recognize that it was in park is there a wired on the shifter itself that could be loose or ....... i don't know any help is appreciated its an 89 grand am if that makes a difference

that would the neutral safety switch. you can get to it from the bottom of your car and is mounted to the shifter on one end and connected to the starter via electrical socket on the other end. about a 30 min job to replace.

there is a "neutral safety switch" that mechanically is engaged by the shifter handle position

well there is a neutral saftey swithch its a button
