Taxes and by default the tax system are very legal here in Canada. The Canadian Constitution provides the federal government with the right to raise funds "by any mode or system of taxation." Pretty cut and dry.
As this was posted in the Cdn area I assume you're interested in Canadian taxation, not US.

I wanted to answer flippantly but you deserve a fair
answer.
Prior to 1925 thereabouts, we had no income tax
system worth a hoot. But we had to pay for a war and
soon, a 2nd war. SKIPPING the next 10,000 words I could write, I will cut to the chase for you;
at least 15 individuals and companies have espoused the
philosophy that income taxes are illegal and stopped paying OR filing. WHEN they get assessed by the IRS [which happens inevitably because of a computer flagging system]
they will fight it and often go to the US Supreme Court.
NO one has ever won there cause the US Consititution's
amendments or rules [am not a political scholar] added this
right of collection 75 yrs ago [it was supposed to last for
3 yrs].
YOU NEED NOT pay taxes, by the way but you must file.
IF YOU Feel you owe no taxes, you must explain why via
LEGAL tax shelters and dependencies!

We are not corporate entities. We are SOVEREIGN individuals of the state we reside in. We do not owe allegiance to the Federal Gov't. The amemdment to create the IRS and establish Federal Taxes was NEVER ratified by the Senate. Only individuals that are of : Military, U.S. possessions, and Federal enclaves (D.C.) can be taxed. The secretary of the Treasury is the person charged with the responsibility to establish a tax for individuals. Therefore out of FEAR created by the IRS we assess ourselves like crazy people..we assess our taxes accordingly on W-4. Run this by your social studies teacher.

Crackpots claim that income taxes are "false" or that the people are "duped." The only ones duped are the folks who listen to these people and then get in big trouble. IRS goes after "tax protesters" more than anyone. Send IRS a bogus "Sovereignty Claim" and a wage levy won't be too far off in your future.
