Don't want to send jewelry away and cannot afford to just buy cleaners off shelf if they don't work, or will ruin jewelry. Anyone have ideas on how to clean them with home-made cleaners that are not going to destroy my jewelry??

Some people say toothpaste is good to clean your jewelry, but I keep thinking its too harsh. I just use good old windex. Just dont soak your jewelry in it, just dip it in and use a soft toothbrush. Makes my diamonds sparkle for days!
Good Luck

I've bought jewelry cleaners off the shelf & have been please w/ the results. (Goddard's for gold and silver, anti-tarnish cloth for silver, liquid soap for gold.)

However, I do not clean my pearl jewelry myself since they can be damaged. Certain stones like turquoise and lapis lazuli need special care.

Here are a couple of helpful articles.

How to Clean Gold Jewelry
Gold doesn't tarnish, but it can be dirtied or dulled by the oil in your skin, body lotion, makeup or other substances. There are lots of products out there that promise to clean gold, but you can do it easily with mild detergent and a soft cloth.
Instructions

* STEP 1: Mix a squeeze of mild dish detergent with warm water in a bowl.
* STEP 2: Put the gold item into the soap mixture and let sit for a few minutes.
* STEP 3: Use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub the jewelry.
* STEP 4: Remove item from soapy water, rinse it and dry thoroughly with a soft polishing cloth.

Overall Tips & Warnings

* It is wise to check clasps, mountings, prongs and posts for damage before washing the jewelry. If you find a problem, take the item to a jeweler for repair.
* Always be sure gold jewelry is completely dry before storing it.
* Never use a harsh or abrasive cleaner, a stiff brush or a scouring pad on gold.

Gold, Platinum and Gemstones

* STEP 1: Use a nonabrasive jewelry cleaner, which you can purchase at a local jewelry store. Or use a cleaning solution of mild dish soap and water.
* STEP 2: Dip the jewelry in the cleaner or cleaning solution.
* STEP 3: Rinse in warm running water.
* STEP 4: Buff dry with a soft, lint-free cloth until it's shiny.

Silver
* STEP 1: Clean the silver with a nonabrasive silver polish.
* STEP 2: Apply the polish with a soft cloth, gently working it into stains.
* STEP 3: Wipe away excess polish and buff the jewelry with a soft, lint-free cloth until it's shiny.
* STEP 4: Keep in mind that frequently wearing silver jewelry can keep it from becoming tarnished.

Overall Tips & Warnings

* Do not use jewelry cleaner on pearls and porous stones, such as emeralds, rubies, lapis lazuli, coral and turquoise. Wipe them clean with a soft, damp cloth or have them cleaned professionally. Consult a jeweler when in doubt about a particular stone.
* Exposure to perfume, cosmetics or perspiration can stain gemstones.

You can clean gold, silver and precious gems with Windex, but don't use it on pearls or opals.

With my diamond rings, I just pop into a good jewelry store every now and then and ask them to take a cursory look at the prongs. They'll usually volunteer to clean them, which is a nice perk.

vinegar, lemon juice and water.

Soak for short amounts of time, like only a minute, then check. Rinse really well in water afterwards.

Do not use toothpaste or baking soda, it is abrasive and will scuff your gold or metal.
