The key is Order of Operations, which is often memorized using the key "PEMDAS" or Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction. This tells you where to begin.

remember to perform parenthetical operations first
so first order of business is (5-r)
if r is 10 then that's (5-10)
(5-10) is -5
the next is multiplication, or 6(-5)
which is -30
lastly do the addition or
10+(-30)
which would be -20
