It depends....

I have hurt my knees playing hockey, a few times.

The knee has three main ligaments running through it. Hopefully, you didn't tear any of them, but rather just pulled one of them. The ACL, is the one that football players are always tearing, and that means an operation, and the end of their season. The MCL is another ligament that is getting strained, or torn. It usually isn't operated on, but rather immobilized, and left to heal. The other ligament, I think is the LCL? I think that one is much like the MCL, just on the other side of the knee. It is possible you may have partially torn one or more of these ligaments depending on what you were doing at the time. You may have just twisted your knee, slightly agrivating one or more of the same ligaments. It is also possible, you just hyperextended your knee. All in all, the treatment is usually the same, immobilization, and rest. In the extreme case, you will need surgery.

I hope you don't need surgery.

Good luck.

Stevo.

RICE
Rest - don't walk on it
Ice - every hour or so put some ice in a bag, wrapped in a teatowel on for about 10 minutes. Don't do more than 15 minutes as you can freeze your tissues.
Compression - bandage knee with a crepe bandage
Elevation - rest with you knee elevated on a cushion

I can't tell you what painkillers to take, but ibuprofen is helpful in injuries because it reduces the swelling as well as decreasing pain. Speak to your pharmacist.

If the doctor isn't helpful, and you've got the money, book into a physiotherapist for a session as they're the experts on things like knees.

My knee is really bad, and I have had stacks of operations so am quite experienced, you are best to elevate and either ice pack or hot water bottle on it to help keep swelling down, it sounds as if your knee discolated slightly and popped back in. This can be very painful and would advice normal dose of paracetamol to help with the pain, good luck with the doctor hopefully that will sort you out.

Sorry to here of your accident dear.

If the leg is swelling use a ice pack on it (some ice in a towel will do) Try to rest your leg but keep it mobile as this will help your recovery. Take some pain kills if you need to, you could have damaged ligament or cartlidge however take advice from doctor and not this wee smart a*s hedgehog.

It sounds like it could be a many number of things (thats the delight with knees!). It could well be your anterior cruciate ligament, your meniscus of a tear of your cartilage.
I had a slight tear in my ACL playing football, my boots got stuck in the ground and I turned, with my kne going to 90 degress to the rest of my leg.
Luckily I didn't need surgery, I had physio for rehab to build up the strength after the teasr repaired itself.

For the time being rest it, and if u notice anymore swelling, appl ice for 20 minutes, then off for 20 minutes, then on again, and also attempt to elevate it.

Good Luck with it, knee injuries are horrible!

you need to see a DOC. you may have injured your Patella or pulled a cartilage or muscle behind it. dont mess around. get in to the dr right away. Use a pain reducer and elevate it with a cold wrap. Stay off it - dont use heatif you gotta move around - i would suggest crutches as a precaution.

Listen to your body, if it hurts don't do it. If I were you I would either call the doctor again and say it's an emergency or if they can't see you any sooner go to casuality. You could end up doing more serious damage if you don't get it fixed.

You could've broken the patella but it's highly unlikely. You could've torn some ligaments in your leg. You really should've gone to the er when it happened so that you could've got the most effective care (like, a brace, or, a cast) go to a urgent care or redimed (if you've got one in your area).
Hope this helps.

SEE A DOCTOR NOW! You probably tore cartilidge which will need to be surgically repaired in all probablility. Don't waste your time here on Yahoo asking a bunch of people who ARE NOT MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS. See an orthopedic doctor asap for evaluation and treatment!
