Coupe or Sedan? Either way go American. Toyota and Honda are far overrated, and Toyota has too many recalls.
Personally I like the Pontiac G6 comes in sedan and coupe, 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder. Price Ranges $16,000-28,000 (latter price is the convertible)
If you want more power, the Pontiac Grand Prix or Chevy Impala are good choices ($20,000-30,000)
Something fuel efficient and smaller? The Chevy Aveo, the Cobalt, or the Ford Focus ($11,000-15,000)
Something Sporty? The Mustang or Mitsubishi Eclipse start at $18,000
Mazda and Saturn are companies to look into

if they are kids under 12, the most sensible way to go would be a minivan or an suv. that way as your family grows, the wont grow out of a smaller car.

I agree with hc8719 Japaness cars are far overated, look @ american autos they are just as good.
A good used car would be:
2000- 2005 Buick le Sabre = Good power and room not to mention great accelration with a great ride.
2000-2004 Odsmobile Aurora = same as the Le Sabre but a nicer interior
