My computer turns on and shows the windows 98 startup screen but when it tries to open wins 98 it says there is a problem with explorer file and won't do anything else. I bought this computer used with no backup disk or wins 98 disk, so I'm not sure what I can do. Any suggestions?

unfortunately you need the windows disk to sort this one out explorer.exe is one of windows main files without it windows can't run to check if it is explorer try booting in to safe mode if you can get into it explores ok and the problem is else where probably you sound driver
to get into safe mode with win 98 hold the crtl key down while booting when the menu appears use the cursor keys to choose safe mode then press enter
You could also try this it's a very simple system restore if it isn't to long ago you started having problems start as you would to start safe mode but choose command prompt then type scanreg/restore press enter then choose a date prior to the date you started having problems you can only go back about five restarts of you computer or five days but it's worth a try

Get UBUNTU (or XUBUNTU if your computer has less than 256MB of RAM). It's easy to install and use. You can dual boot it with other operating systems. It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system. Once you have it installed, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community. There is excellent support see the WIKI starter guide, and the Linux forums.

Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.

I think its time to upgrade to a newer OS. Microsoft no longer even provides security updates for Windows 98.
