How about this for a theory:
they are ridiculing something they don't understand because they feel threatened and inadequate.

mediocre intelligence IS the norm. But, everyone says things are stupid. it's their way of avoiding logical thinking.

Intelligence is relative to the subject, or person in question! A person of mediocre intelligence is not always "stupid" they just don't understand or comprehend the subject at hand. Therefore they call it stupid.
Normal is relative to the surrounding and who is saying what is normal. A traffic jam at 2 am is normal in L.A. To say that is normal every where is a wrong statement.

They seem to follow the crowd. if one person has an opinion on something then they follow as if they are a mindless drone.
if they were truely intelligent then they would not call something simply differant from the norm stupid. they simply don't understand.

They're either closed minded (it has a lot to do with what enviroment they have grown up in) or they probably just don't really care about the subject in question.
