depending on which department of government you are applying it will vary very slightly
things they check for are:
nationality
address
ccjs (if in finance)
fraud
convictions
criminal record
validity of documents you provided
eligibility to work in the UK
if in transport( licence, points, suspensions, revokation)
qualification/ educational validation
the whole point of doing checks is to see if you are who you say you are. to assess the risk you pose with the associated job.

Basic security questions - which every employer will run on you - do you have a criminal record? If so, what?
If you are talking about a security clearance, they will want to know if you have anything in your background that could blackmail you. They will find out if you have close family relatives that live in foriegn countries. Your close friends or family could be harassed or detained, and your cooperation is necessary for their safety. Finally, they will investigate your financial history, to see if you are heavily in debt, which may make you a security risk. The higher the clearance, the more rigorous the examiniation.

See if you have any current or outstanding convictions. Like if you were going to work in a school, and were on the sex offenders list, no chance of getting the job.
