I will be going to CA in the summer to go to college. I will need to establish California residency for the following years to save money.

What do I need to do this?

The answers above would be correct if you were not trying to establish residence for the purpose of paying resident tuition in college. If that is your goal, it is far more complicated, and includes financial independence (e.g., your parents have not claimed you as a dependent for TWO years), and a demonstrated intent to remain in California AFTER you are finished with your education.

Otherwise, of course, every out-of-state student would be a resident after the freshman year. That is not going to happen.

Move to California and rent (or buy) a place to live. Change your driver's licence to reflect your new state of residency.

That's it. Being a resident means residing in the state.

Show your Mexican passport to the proper authorities. You will get California residency immediately.

Find a place to live. Get a CA drivers License. Get CA license plates. And you should be set.

I suggest walking across the river from Mexico. Then the state will bend over backwards to provide you with health care, housing and educational expenses.

I'm one of the suckers paying for all this.
