Air ratchet is ratchet powered by an air compressor that gives you a more torque than just your muscles. Impact wrench is also powered by an air compressor and gives more torque than your muscles.

Air ratchet is used for loosening nuts or bolts at a faster speed or for those that are hard to remove.

Impacts wrench is bigger than an air ratchet, thus limiting where you can use it. However, it is also used for quicker or easier removal of nuts or bolts. In addition, an impact wrench is used for over sized bolts nuts.

Torque wrench is used to tighten bolts or nuts to specification, in order to prevent over or under tightening (both can cause damage).

Air ratchets are simply a pneumatic form of the standard socket set ratchets that were all familiar with. They come in different sizes such as 3/8", 1/2 and 3/4" just like the hand ratchets. Usually they will limited to the amount of torque they can deliver of say 30 ft-lbs to 100 ft-lbs.

An Impact wrench or impact gun usually shaped like a gun or a hand drill can deliver much higher torques such as 200ft-lbs to 800 + ft-lbs. The high torque forces allow these impact wrenches to loosen ( breaking loose) nuts and lugs that been torqued to a high value such as lug nuts on auto/truck tires. These impact wrenches require special "impact sockets" designed for the high impact stresses. Impact wrenches are good as removing nuts but since the psi of the air supplying power to the impact wrench will vary, they not so good and not used at installing and re-torqueing the nuts to specifications. This is where the torque wrench come in. There are many types most of which are manual wrenches which can be calibrated to be used manually deliver the exact torque called for.

Air ratchet & impact wrench are both very similiar tools
used to remove bolts & nuts in a very speedy fashion with
an air-compressor. Torque wrench is a hand-tool with a
built in guage for measuring precise tightening of nuts and
bolts by hand.

Impact Ratchet

JJ is correct. The air powered impact will give you more power and durability for your money, assuming you already have a compressor big enough to run air tools. Plus the fact that a battery impact is most likely worthless if it costs 50 bones. A high quality one might dip below 200, most will be over 200 without the battery. Craftsman has air compressor packages that come with a reasonable impact wrench, air ratchet, d.a. sander, other accesories, and air gun for around 300.

an air ratchet is for using sockets and extensions for disassembaling things, An impact wrench is for breaking loose bolts and tightening bolts ( heavier bolts..ie-lug nuts, ect.) these two require compressed air to use. A torque wrench is used to manually tighten bolts to set them at certain pound pressure, no air is required.
