I read the book in the mid '90s. It started with a fat girl whose parents' yacht exploded at sea (something to do with changing fuel between tanks) and she was going to let herself die until she realised that there was someone else in the water. She ended up rescuing two of the crew and they wound up on an island with a colony of birds at its heart. She learnt to find food (including birds eggs). There were men ('baddies') who came to hunt the birds, and when one of the two crew members condition deteriorated, she left him out for the men to find in the hope that they would take him to a hospital. I also remember something about a walrus or similar in a cave on the seashore. By the time she managed to get back to the US, she was slim. Apologies for the somewhat disjointed nature of my memories! I think the front cover had a picture of a hand sticking out of a blue sea covered in debris, but I might be making that up!
Cheers

Check with your local librarian. They are usually excellent at remembering titles. You can also keyword search the catalog for something like Shipwreck Fiction.

It sounds a little like Kentsuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo (sp?), but that was a boy, and there wasn't any crew, and it isn't that old (sorry, but it was a great book).

The Cay is the only book I can think of that is slightly similar to this story. But you said it's about a girl, so I guess this wouldn't be it.

This is a tough one! Do you remember the names of any of the characters?
