There is an electronic sensor in the gearbox, that sends an electronic signal to the instrument cluster.

every speedo is linked directly to drive prop which runs from the gear box to the either the front or the back wheels (depend on whether it is front or rear wheel drive). it whill either be a small cog or wheel that sits on on the drive prop.
