A power heads purpose in an aquarium is to increase the efficiency of your under gravel filter. Note my words "Under Gravel Filter".

It does this by increasing the flow of water through your gravel bed, making it more oxygen rich for your good bacteria in there.

If you need it, depends on how heavy of a fish load you have on your aquarium. If you have goldfish, I would say yes, they tend to be dirty fish and create a lot of waste and the more biological filtration you have the better!

If not an absolute requirement in your tank, powerhead which are just little mini-pumps can also add overall benefit. They not only stimulate circulation and prevent dead zones in the tank, they also create flow patterns in the water that simulate natural waves.

Some people put their powerheads on "wavemakers", which turn different ones on and off in a regular pattern, further creating wave effects.

Contrary to the belief that a "P-HEAD is used to move upper level of the tanks water and create oxygen to mix with water, it actually does not do so, for which a 2$ bubble stone is enough."

Hope this helps pal !

A powerhead is basically a water pump.
They are often used in marine (saltwater) tanks to simulate ocean currents.
They are used in under gravel filters.
They are at times also used in freshwater tanks - particularly in large tanks - to keep the water moving.
They can also be used in conjunction with CO2, either by creating a "vortex" for the CO2 bubbles to be disolved in, or by breaking up the CO2 bubbles into smaller bubbles.
If aimed towards the surface of the water, they can also increase oxygenation.

Unless you have a very large tank, or a marine tank, you probably don't need one, as your filter should provide adequate water movement.

A powerhead is basically a water pump. They can have numerous uses such as pumping water through your filter or to move water through a UV Sterilizer. Whether you will benefit from one or not depends on what you need to do. I don't think they have any purpose other than water movement.

A powerhead is a water pump designed for use underwater. They are most often used to power undergravel filters or small in tank filters. If you don't have these, you don't need one.
