Sure you can. Marge Thatcher once said
"If you show me consensus, I will show you a lack of leadership."
Greatness is always carried out by those who go against the grain. Columbus was a great man because he sailed west for treasure rather than east. Michinaga was great man because he used daughters to secure the throne, and stabalized the shogunate in the process. Edward the Black was a great man, and went against the grain by giving civilization to the Welsh.
Greatness is defined in the moments when everone else obsreves. it is acting against the grain that creates great men and great nations.
One of the defining moments of American greatness was our war against the barbary states. The rest of the world was content to pay them off with tribute, but America led the way and went to war. In the process, the barbary pirates were smashed, and everyone gained. At the time America was seen as an upstart who would create more trouble than she would gain in success. History has shown those lesser diplomats to be wrong.

I believe that one of the definitions of greatness is being willing to stand up for what is right, regardless of the unwillingness of others to support you. Despite the faults that our nation does have, we are a beacon of hope and prosperity to many, and we have become that, and will remain so, by standing up for our beliefs.

Sure. It's all subjective opinion.
Greatness has to do with reputation and approval. Since there is no objective scale that is used to define greatness, someone (or some country) can be declared great arbitrarily.

History will be a better guide than a popularity poll.
Of course the question is then, who will write "history"?

If everyone disagrees with me, then I would need to take a closer look inward.

Yes, but it doesn't make it true or false. Many people can be just as wrong as one.

You say whatever you want it doesn't have to be true, you just need to convince everyone it is.
