Cozumel is very safe!! It is a wonderful island and you are sure to have a wonderful time with your children, especially with the atmosphere of San Miguel.
I go to Cozumel every year, and if you plan on going in the summer months this is not the high season of tourism, so this could be a bonus for you!! You will be catered to as far as there will not be a lot of tourists!
Rent a car and buzz around the island see the East side for its beauty and craziness. The waves are AWESOME and fierce. You can take a tour of Punta Sur of you wish. Stop by the little beach bars for soda pops and watch the waves, or enjoy a burger. We like to go to Coconuts, that is our yearly stop!
If you like to snorkel there is Dzul-Ha Beach Club, which is nice you can get food and drink there, and also rent equipment. There is also Sunset Beach Club(I like it there better more fish too see)
San Miguel is a wonderful small town that is safe to walk around in, compared to neighboring Cancun and Playa. The folks there are very warm and welcoming and are more than willing to give directions to any where you may be heading. The restaurants are fabulous, and well priced.
here is a website that Will help you out.

Queretaro to Mexico city is two hours. Going in the time of Mexico city will take you yet another 2, that's 4, and from there you'll favor yet another twenty 2 to get to Puerto Morelos, that's twenty six. Then, you won't be able to emphasize because Cozumel is an island...you'll favor to get on the ferry which runs a number of circumstances an afternoon from there (very last time I went the ferry basically moved human beings, no longer autos, may be diverse now) and that is a 40 5 minute experience. finished, some thing between 26 and 30 hours (including the ferry waiting) this helps quick "pit-stops" and quick eating.

I definately recommend Cozumel. I am thirteen now, and when I was 9, 10, and 11, we went every single year for Spring Break and stayed at the same hotel, the Fiesta Americana. Cozumel is a WONDERFUL place to vacation. They have snorkeling, scuba diving, malls, tombs which you can visit, you can swim with the dolphins, and SO much more. I recommend Cozumel more than anything!

Cozumel is a great place for a family vacation. My husband and I took our 12 year old son there and he had a blast. A very kid friendly hotel is El Cozumeleno, and it is great for adults too. They have a child's club, a mini golf course, snorkeling of the beach and many other things to do. My son found many children his age to hang out with too. One thing you can do is when you check in to whatever hotel you are staying at visit the tourist info group in the hotel, they will set up all kinds of adventures for your family. We did a jeep tour around the island and everyone of had so much fun. I hope you have a great time.
