Debbie Melnyk and Rick Caine tried to do a documentary of their own about Michael Moore and ran into the same sort of resistance Moore himself famously faces in his own films.

The result is "Manufacturing Dissent," which turns the camera on the confrontational documentarian and examines some of his methods. Among their revelations in the movie, which had its world premiere Saturday night at the South by Southwest film festival: That Moore actually did speak with then-General Motors chairman Roger Smith, the evasive subject of his 1989 debut "Roger & Me," but chose to withhold that footage from the final cut.

Having been in Boy Scouts and Little League and grade and high school with Mr. Moore, the answer to the second question seems to be yes, a resounding yes. I was on a baseball team with him that lost every game (he was first-baseman) until he got tired of losing and quit the team. After he left, we won.
In Boy Scouts, he was senior patrol leader. When someone else was voted senior patrol leader, he quit the scouts. I was there, I know. There is the truth, and there is what he wants you to hear. There will be some truth in what he wants you to hear. Will it all be truth? I have my doubts.

Moore started out with a point of view and included material in his film to support it, just as your documentarian probably did. I like the documentaries that include all sides of a dispute myself.

You're right. If it is true and on the face of the facts as presented, one wonders why he would act in a way that seems to go against his own principles. All I can say is that if this is one issolated incident than there may be more to it than what appears in the yahoo news reference you gave. Also, and I think this is important, that we expect more of our heros than we expect of ourselves. Having said this, we agree that what we expect of heros can also be something we can expect of each other - that we are true to our ideals. Sometimes the halo gets heavy and it slips - for you, me and Michael.
