What makes me think your not interested in the flowers? Both Oriental and opium poppies need full sun and crappy soil will do or you can crap on it for good measure. And before you ask, the poppy seeds in the grocery spice rack will grow and produce opium. RScott

Poppies are quite easy. Just sow them in a sunny spot, rake them in lightly and treat as you would any annual. Have good soil but don't bother to fertilize, and don't over-water. They will self seed, so you may never have to sow again.

Sow directly late spring.
Soil doesn't have to be fertile but it should be weed free.
Keep watered until they germinate and than they are carefree
