First, do NOT give medicine just for fussiness, someone posted to give Tylenol or Motrin. Any medicine affects the body, Tylenol particularly the liver. Babies don't need to be overmedicated. *rant over*
When baby is fussy parents often can't gather their thoughts enough to stop and take stock of what's going on. (I know I have this problem) First of all evaluate what's going on around the baby, noise? strangers? lights? Has baby slept well the last couple days? Has he napped yet today? Overtired and overstimulated will make them fussy. Has he eaten lately? If he's in a growth spurt he made need more food.
Is he congested? Sneezing? Showing symptoms of a cold? If so it's possible his ears may be congested or possibly infected. Check his temperature. A low grade fever can cause fussiness.
Seperation anxiety isn't likely if he doesn't calm down when you pick him up and try to soothe him.
8 months old he may very well be teething. Teething pain starts ~before~ the teeth actually break through the gums. If he'll let you, pry open his mouth and take a look, are there any white spots on the gums? If there are these are generally teeth that are getting ready to break through over the next few days. Even if you don't see anything try wetting a washcloth and freezing it (doesn't take long). Then give him the washcloth to chew. The cold helps numb the jaw and the chewing gives counterpressure that helps with pain. You may want to experiment with different cold objects, but be absolutly SURE if you give him food objects that you keep him under supervision. If he gets a big enough chunk off it he could choke. I've heard of using frozen banannas, bagels, carrots (choking hazzard, be careful with them) and popsicles (I don't because of sugar.)
If none of these seem to apply and he just won't calm down, call your pediatrician and see if they can help.
Good luck.

He could be teething. Is he drooling a lot or chewing on his fingers or toys? Look inside his mouth & you can tell if he may have some teeth trying to come through. He could, however, be having seperation anxiety. My children went through a time when they didn't want me out of their sight for one moment, when, previously, they could play for an hour without giving me a 2nd glance. I would try to rule out as many possibilities as I could. It also could be an ear infection. Watch for signs such as pulling at his ears, turning his head from side to side, or fever. If nothing else works, I would suggest talking to your pediatrician. Good luck!

It sounds like he's going through the wonderful stage called teething. My son, also, is 8 months old...well, he will be on the 17th and he aslo has no teeth yet.
Try giving your son a frozen (clean)facecloth to gum on...that will help and I know my son likes it. Another option is to try some infant tylenol (dose according to his weight, not his age) and/or some baby oragel. If you do this and he still cries and stuff...I would just chalk it up to being a baby... his stages and schedules will change just as you get used to them
Good Luck

Sounds like he could be teething. Try some tylenol or infants motrin. My daughter is 10 months and has 8 teeth! Other things too look for with teething are drooling, chewing on hands or anything he can get his hands on. Good luck! Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need a break.

its most likely his teeth that is bothereing him. What i do with my son is take a face cloth wet it, and then freeze it in the freezer, and let him chew on it. Or if you have a gum massager put some oraljel on it and run it along his gums.
I hope this works if it doesnt, just sing to him, take him for car ride or a walk, usual calms them down....put a baby tender lullabies cd in and that should help.

Your baby just wants some attention, so if you give it to him he should stop. Also, try feeding him mushy cereal or some mushed up fries! It should put him to sleep, it put me to sleep.
