What is the best way to introduce a cat to a dog? Supposedly the dog isn't good with cats, and I don't want to give up my cat. The reason why I am asking is because I will be moving in with someone who has a dog who might not be to friendly with cats.

Defiantely bring something in that smells like the cat and give something to the cat with your dogs smell so they will get used to it. Make sure you hold the dog when they introduce and let the cat smell him. Give it a few days the cat will be more comfortable and they will be buddies befoe you know it.

Caution !
You may have problems with the dog (breed was not mentioned) but there are some that like to EAT (as in kill) cats. It is a sure bet the cat will turn into a clawed fuzz ball and do lots of hissing and threat display which will encourage the dog. I would suggest that you corral the dog and see how bad the dog will be about the introductions. Good luck.

If there's room in your new place, my best course of action so far has been to keep the cat in a seperate room with all of it's stuff (toys, food, litter box...) and let the cat and dog sniff each other under the door for a few days. Also, if you have anything from both the cat and the dog that smells like them, for instance, take one of the cats toys and rub it on the dog and vice-versa just to get the smell on them.

For starters I'd take something that smells like the cat (towel, bedding, ect.) to the dog so he can smell it. Then I would introduce them away from the dogs home. That is his territory and he will defend it. Can the dog come by the place your living at now for a "visit"?

before you move in, bring in a some article that belongs to your cat and let the dogs smell it. do the opposite, see if you can bring home one of the dogs toys. after a week, bring the items back.

once they know the scent, then there would be no big shock. after that, bring your cat over. make sure the dogs are crated or are in a calm state. let the cat explore the room you will be in. let her walk up to them. KEEP THEM CALM with treats and soothing praise. let your cat make the first move.

after awhile, they should become friends.

good luck to you.
