In order to subtract them, the denominators have to be the same. To get them the same, use the least common multiple of both numbers (in this case, 20). Then multiply 3/5 by 4/4 (because 4/4 = 1, and you can multiply anything by 1) and 1/4 by 5/5. Make sure you multiply the top and bottom by the same thing, otherwise it won't be multiplying by 1. Then do the math to the top numbers, and put it over the bottom. Then simplify if you can.

3/5-1/4 = 3/5*4/4-1/4*5/5= 12/20-5/20= 7/20

you have to make the denominators the same ...so it will be 12/20 - 5/20 and then u subtract the numerators normally
