My 1999 Saxo 1.5D belches out loads of blue smoke when I start it up after its been sitting for a few hours. What causes this? Should I be worried? The car runs perfectly otherwise.

Take it to an independent garage or even Kwik Fit or something similar and ask them for a free check up. They might point you in the right direction.

Oil drains down worn valve guides when the vehicle is standing for a few hours, and deposits it's self on the piston crown where it is burnt off as soon as you start the engine, as already stated. out of interest if this is the TUD 5 engine we are discussing the heater plugs should be above the injectors, whereas the TUD 3 (1400cc) are below it, (yes this is correct I've just checked my recon stock head) and the TUD 5 engine revolts if it has a TUD 3 Head on it, eg: the guides are shorter, which happens quite frequently in the Garage Trade, this may cause your problem.

If its a Turbo Diesel it could be the turbo is on its way out. I know because i had a TD (not Saxo) and the Turbo went hence the blue smoke.

Blue smoke usually indicates oil has run down into the cylinders while it's idle, perhaps via worn valve guides. It may go on like that for a long time before action needs to be taken.

Because the engine is cold and is not burning all the fuel injected into it, if the smoke clears quickly there is nothing to worry about, if it continues to smoke you are burning either (a)too much fuel or (b) engine oil, either way get it looked at by a good mechanic.
