back before the Mexican American war a number of Irish-Americans deserted the American Army and joined the Mexican Army because they felt they had more in common with the Catholic Mexicans then the Protestant Americans. They eventually fought against the Americans in a unit called the San Patricio's. They were honored by the Mexican Government but if caught hung buy the Americans. In their honor there is still a large St Patrick's Day Parade in Mexico City. In fact it is the fourth largest in the world behind NYC, Chicago and Dublin
The former President of Mexico Vincento FOX is a direct descendent of member of the San Patrico's

In Baja Norte where there are a lot of Americans and Canadian expats, the bars and restaurants "celebrate" St. Patrick's Day with corned beef and cabbage specials. Its a fun party. Officially there is no celebration.

The US is the only country that celebrates other countries' holidays.
St Patrick's day may be recognized in a resort area as something to put up decorations for... but the Mexicans don't really celebrate it as anything other than something that gets them more tourist trade.

St. Patrick's day is just an excuse to go to the bar and get sloshed. Mexicans do this all year round so there's no need for them to celebrate the holiday.
