I had the file as a Shortcut on my desktop, tried Fixing Shortcuts and I have tried System Restore, Search, Run, all the usual ways of searching. It has completely gone and it was a very large file (mostly Word, some Excel contained in it).
How can I retrieve this data? Been looking at the sites for free downloads to retrieve data and it says that it cannot be saved to the same system that the missing data is stored in - what does THAT mean?! I really need some help with this...........

You will need a file recovery tool to help you with this task. Most good tools will allow you to narrow your scope by using file names, extensions, etc.

I recently had to do the same as I accidentally began to erase my entire music library. I ponied up 30 bucks for Filerecover (http://www.pctools.com/file-recover) and it worked great for me. You might also try a free version such as these (http://www.softwarepatch.com/tips/howto-file-recovery.html). Trust me though, all is not lost yet. Just do it sooner than later before that sector of your memory is overwritten.

Best of luck!

Instead of searching by name or something, search by *.* or *.doc for the name but go to advanced and put in a size and a date (so you are looking for over 100,000 and since 12/31/06 if you worked on it this year. Tell the search program to look in all directories on all your drives.
You might also look in the Recycle Bin to see if the file or shortcut are there.

u probably deleted the shortcut by mistake or smth... try to find the original file
system restore doesnt fix these things, as it only restores some system settings and uninsatlls programs but doesnt do anything to data on the hd.....if u deleted it then its gone

You download and burn the iso to cdrom, http://pclinuxos.com or one of the 310 at http://livecdlist.com

They run in the CDrom, boot in RAM, and so, the Hard Drive and all it's files in folders are separate from it. You can open them and copy things over to any external media, like a CD, DVD, USB stick, external drive...

That's how we save our systems.
